Langtang / Gosaikunda Trek

The Langtang Gosaikunda trek is the perfect amalgamation of one of the easier and more beautiful treks in Nepal, with a final leg that takes trekkers on the scenic Gosaikunda trail.

The Langtang region was long one of Nepal’s most popular destinations on the trekking map until the area was dealt a terrible blow by the 2015 earthquake, and it has taken until very recently to recover, though the numbers of visitors remain down on past years. So not only do its former scenic charms still exist, but choosing to trek through the valley helps to economically restore the lives of the friendly Tamang people who populate the region.

As a teahouse trek alternative to Annapurna and Everest the Langtang Gosaikunda Trek is a superb choice that rounds out the forested lowlands, alpine pastures, and yak herds of Kyanjin Gompa in Langtang Valley with the sacred jewel of Gosaikunda Lake and the Sherpa meadows of Helambu.

From Kathmandu the normal approach is by the Trisuli River to Syabrubesi, the trailhead for the trek.

The route winds through dense rhododendron forest on either side of the river until it breaks from of the tree line and heads into the alpine regions, across glacial moraine, and on to the rebuilt village of Langtang. Further and higher into the valley’s inner sanctum are the yak pasturelands and dramatic setting for Kyanjin Gompa, a remote monastery famous for the production of yak cheese. Optional climbs to either Kyanjin Ri or Cherko Ri render panoramic views of the nearby mountains, including Langtang Lirung, which dominates the valley at a height of 7234 meters.

Returning back towards the trailhead the Gosaikunda route heads off in a southeast direction and climbs steadily through terraced fields to scenic highlands offering a stunning view of distant peaks such as Manaslu (8163m) and the Tibetan plateau to the north. The trail then leads on to Gosaikunda and the sacred lake of Gosaikunda, a serene mountain vale that adds even more to the magical outlook across to the distant Himalayan peaks. In August the area becomes a major pilgrimage sight to Hindus who flock to the region during Janai Purnima to pay homage to a site held to have been Shiva’s temporary home.

The Langtang Valley with Gosaikunda trek finally culminates with the climb to the pass of Laurabina La (4610m) and the outpost of Thadepati nearby with its dramatic views to the east, not least the sunrise that awaits those who stay the night there. The last stretch involves taking the trail to Chisapani and onwards to Sundarijal, which offers a satisfying conclusion to the journey.

The final choice is up to you, so why not contact us and let us help you make a trek through Langtang valley and Gosaikunda a reality you’ll always treasure!

Everest Tashi Lapcha Pass Trek

Welcome to Nepal!

The Rolwaling Tashi Lapcha Pass trek goes through the Gauri Shankar Conservation Area and the Sagarmatha National Park, linking the Rolwaling Valley with the Everest region.

This trek will visit the beautiful Tso Rolpa Lake (4183 m), summit the Tashi Lapcha Pass (5682 m), visit Namche Bazaar, and offers superb breathtaking views of Gauri Shankar and Everest, and many other mountains. The Tashi Lapcha Pass is perhaps the most difficult in this region, so a high level of fitness and stamina is required.

This is reportedly one of the possible routes that people from Kham in Tibet used during the mid-1800’s. These people subsequently settled in this area and the Everest region and are now known as Sherpa. Therefore, this trek also has historical and cultural significance. After crossing the pass and coming into the Everest region, there are glorious views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru. And once reaching the bustling market town of Namche Bazaar there is an opportunity to interact with other trekking and climbing groups as well as the Sherpas.

But before that, aside from perhaps spotting a snow partridge or two, and coming across herds of yaks (or more specifically, naks) producing milk for cheese making, don’t forget to look out for the fabled Yeti. It was on the slopes of the Rolwaling Peak that Eric Shipton photographed Yeti footprints in 1951!

This trek certainly combines history and culture with stunning mountain views, and the satisfaction of crossing a high Himalayan pass.

Jumla to Dolpo is perhaps the best way to get a taste of remote Nepali country life.

Arranged in the seasons when the air is clear, the mountains are lovely, and the dry plains heart touching, this trek climbs up to villages, which are possibly the highest natural settlements of man. Mountains and monasteries are found in unlikely places, and the region still has followers of the pre-Buddhist Bonpo religion.

This region was opened up in 1989 to organized trekking groups and to individual trekkers in 1990. There are Tibetan style inner Dolpo villages in Tarap, but most of the southern part of Dolpo is a region of Hindu influence.

The trek begins from Jumla, taking the trail route via Garankot, Bolanga Pass and assent to Bottom Baga La (5180m), which is highest point of the trek. We descend through Ringmo, Chepkadown to Juphal, where we catch the flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgung.

Upper Mustang / Lo Manthang Trek

Lying beyond the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif in central Nepal is the hidden Kingdom of Mustang, an intriguing parched region, forming part of the Tibetan plateau.

Untouched by the outside world, 16th century monasteries remain active, adorned with unrivalled frescoes, thankas and status of gigantic deities, preserving ancient traditions. Mustang is the land of Barley field’s pastures for grazing herds. These upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki river which has tantalized a generation of trekkers – have recently been opened in 1992. Mustang being a restricted area, there are certain formalities required by the government of Nepal in obtaining a special permit.

The journey to Mustang begins with a flight to Jomsom via Pokhara. Two days walking from Jomsom we cross the traditional boundary into the wild lunar landscape of Mustang.

Our itinerary allows plenty of time to explore the main town of Lo Manthang, the impressive walled capital. Mustang trek is scheduled during the summer months when the people are most active in the fields, villages and monasteries.

Nar Phu Valley Trek

Hidden by swirls of mountain mist ahead of us, from Kangla pass at 5200m the magnificent panorama view of Annapurna massif appears remote and forbidding.

Our destination is the Nar-Phu valley, above the tree line on the upper limits of cultivation, in the very north of Manang district. It takes five hours reaching the pass that links Nar with Manang and three other Bhotia villages in the Nyershang down valley.

Nowadays, Nar Phu the population about 300 inhabitants who depend on livestock, unlike most Bhotia people, whose trading patterns changed drastically after the Nepali Government closed borders with Tibet, the people of Nar and Phu valley were least affected by this change. The tortuous path leading from the valley into Tibet had never made them dependent on the salt trade, and till today yak herding is the basis of their livelihood.

Besides the Kangla linking Nar to the Nyeshang valley , the most direct route from Kathmandu to Nar and Phu is along the Marshyangdi River. Travellers trek through the Himalayan foothills and round the eastern end of the Annapurna before they arrive at Qupar, a police check post half and hour before Chame, Manang’s district headquarters. From here a long and steep trail winds up to Nar and Phu whose villagers, laden with goods purchased in Chame and even lower down in Besishhar, the end of the roadhead leading to Manang, often camp at Dharmashala, a rudimentary wooden hut built by the people from the two villages.

The Nepal government’s recent decision to open up Nar and Phu to tourists has evoked little enthusiasm among the villagers, whose pastoral lifestyle continues. Apart from the odd researcher and climbing expeditions permitted to climb Him lung, Ratnachuli and Gachikang, few foreigners has visited the area and tourism infrastructure is almost non-existent. Since Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) recently extended its network to include Nar and Phu Valley, it is preparing a suitable tourism development plan at the request of the government for undiscovered valley.

Annapurna Circuit Trek

Nepal’s second most popular traditional trek is the trekking around the Annapurna.

This trek is also one of the featured trekking that Himalayan Windhorse organize in Nepal.

We will be traveling through altitudes ranging from 800m to 5,416m taking us through several climatic zones past rice paddy fields, subtropical forests, rural farmland, and glacial zones.

You will be able to view panoramic sceneries of the Himalayas, including Mt. Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Mt. Annapurna I (8,091m), Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), Mt. Annapurna II (7,937 m.), Mt. Lamjung Himal (6,986m), Tukuche peak (6,920m), and Tilicho peak (7134m).

This trek provides you the opportunity to learn about the Tibetan way of life that strongly runs in Mustang valleys. There is a slight chance of seeing a snow leopard in Yak Kharka along with blue sheep. We will also stop at Tatopani, where you can take a dip in the famous hot springs.

We will start the trek at Bhulbhule after a scenic drive from Kathmandu, and the route follows the Marsyandghi River Valley taking you through Jagat, Dharapani, Chame, and Pisang. We will be spending a night in all these places.

On our sixth day, we trek to Manang, where we stay for acclimatization to prepare for the crossing of Thorung La pass. After acclimatizing at Manang, we continue the trail and head to Yak Kharka, and on the next day, we hike up to Thorong Phedi and spend the night there.

We leave Thorong Phedi on our ninth day and trek towards Muktinath, and this will be the day you will cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m/17,769ft). Thorong La Pass connects Manang village in the east with Muktinath temple and Ranipauwa village to the west.

After passing the Thorong La Pass, we head down to Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists. From Muktinath, we drive to Tatopani -famous for hot springs. People believe that hot spring water at Tatopani cures skin diseases. If you like, you can take a dip in this hot water. We will be spending the night at Tatopani.

The next day, we will trek from Tatopani, through lush rhododendron, birch, and magnolia forests, to Ghorepani. We will be spending our night in Ghorepani. The following morning we wake up at Ghorepani and trek for about an hour to reach Poon Hill. Poon Hill is a famous viewpoint known for spectacular views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna (I, II, III, South), Hiuchuli, Nilgiri, Macchapuchre, Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, and Gurja Himal.

After spending some quality time in Poon Hill, we trek to Berithanti and then drive to Pokhara, where we will spend our last night in the trekking region. The following morning we will return to Kathmandu on a tourist bus.

This journey is for trekkers who would like to experience adventurous journeys in the Nepali Himalayan region while enjoying the diversified scenery, geography, and different climate zones. We have other exciting trek packages in the Annapurna region, and if you want, Himalayan Windhorse can customize your trek.

This remote and challenging trek for the more adventurous walker circles Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain in the world.

From here we, either, fly back to Kathmandu via Pokhara or we can continue from Jomsom till Birerthaqnti or to Pokhara.
