Mt. Tilicho Peak Expedition (7134M)

Mt. Tilicho Peak is a tower at a height of 7,134m. Mountaineers rate this as a technical climb, and not so easy. There are two ways to reach up to Base Camp. Tilicho Peak expedition starts up with a drive to Khudi followed by several days trekking to the Tilicho Base Camp via Manang and Khangsar Village as well as another way is a short mountain flight from Pokhara bringing us to the dry and dusty hill town of Jomsom as well as start from Beni Bazaar to Jomsom.

From here we proceed east and north to cross the high and very difficult Mesokanto Pass at an altitude of 5300m. At the top of the pass, we managed to locate some marine fossils (shells) which testify to the fact that the Himalayas was once beneath the sea. We choose the first idea as this allows enough time for acclimatization and fewer difficulties for taking all the logistics. The views on the routes are breathtaking; anything that can surpass your imagination. What you see is Tilicho Peak and the azure and peaceful Tilicho Lake below. It is a glacial lake and unfriendly to marine life. People say they often find marine fossils (shells) that probably support the fact that the Himalayas were once beneath the sea.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Kathmandu [1345m/4411ft] & transfer to Hotel

Our Himalayan Windhorse representatives will meet you at Tribhuvan International Airport on your arrival schedule. Then you will be transferred to the hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city. Our staff will help you until the check-in procedure ends at the Hotel. You can either have a rest at the Hotel or visit NGT’s office for gathering information about the trip. In the evening, please join our welcome dinner program hosting by Himalayan Windhorse Adventure.

Day 2: Sightseeing in Kathmandu & Climbing Preparations

Today we will spend most of our day sightseeing around some of the world heritage sites of UNESCO inside Kathmandu valley. Most importantly we will complete all the necessary paper works and make other preparations required for Tilicho Peak Expedition.
Note: It is not possible to visit all world heritage sites in Kathmandu within a day. So you can choose at least 3-4 places for day sightseeing.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Chamje [1410m/4626ft]

After breakfast, we prepare for a drive from Kathmandu along the banks of Trishuli River for a couple of hours up to Dumre and then along the banks of Marsyangdi River. Our drive goes over scenic zigzag hilly roads passing through Besisahar and drive towards Chamje. Before we could drive up to Besisahar and trek from there, but now the expansion of motor road has made it possible to drive further to Chamje – the starting point of the trek.

Day 4: Trek from Chamje to Bagarchhap [2164m/7097ft]

Our trek starts from Chamje, we will cross a suspension bridge and then ascend to reach Sattale where the valley becomes narrow. After a while, we will arrive at the village of Tal, which marks the entry to Manang district. From Tal village, our trail descends down to cross a suspension bridge over Marsyangdi River. From there a moderate trek will lead us to the Gurung village of Dharapani.  Our trail from there leads through landslide affected area towards the village of Bagarchhap.

Day 5: Trek from Bagarchhap to Chame [2713m/8898ft]

After breakfast, we leave Bagarchhap and continue our trek on the trail that goes along the left bank of the Marsyangdi river towards Koto. An easy trek from Koto will lead us to Chame for the overnight stay. Chame is the main administrative centre of Manang District where there is an abundance of shops and comfy teahouses.

Day 6: Trek from Chame to Pisang [3185m/10446ft]

Today we leave Chame and follow the trail that heads west along the river banks towards Bharatang. From there, our trek goes along the banks of Marsyangdi River and then cross a suspension bridge before making a climb to reach Dhukur Pokhari. Our trail gradually opens up with magnificent snow-capped peaks around us. After an hour’s trek from Dhukur Pokhari, we will arrive at Pisang. From Pisang, we can enjoy magnificent views of Pisang Peak and Annapurna II.

Day 7: Trek from Pisang to Manang [3551m/11647ft]

From Pisang, there are two different trekking trails heading towards Manang. The  ‘Upper route’ follows a high altitude level and ‘Lower route’ follows quite lower. On the way, we will visit a monastery. The Upper route offers panoramic scenery of chains of Snow Capped Himalayas than a lower route. Spectacular view of Annapurna, Pisang peak and many other snowcapped peaks adds extra pleasure for today’s trekking as we head towards Manang for our overnight stay.

Day 8: Rest Day at Manang

By now we have reached over 3500 meters above sea level. So it is very important to take a day rest for acclimatization in the higher altitudes to avoid high altitude sickness and to ensure the successful summit climb of Tilicho Peak. Besides, Manang has a lot to offers for its visitors. Manang is a medieval, Tibetan-style village where there are many teahouses and campsites. The best view of Annapurna II 7939m, Annapurna IV 7525m, Annapurna III 7555m, Gangapurna 7454m, Tilicho Peak 7134m and other snow-capped peaks can be seen right in front of us.

Day 9: Trek from Manang to Khangsar [3850m/12628ft]

After breakfast, we leave Manang and follow the trail that demands elevation all the way up to Khangsar. During our trek, we are rewarded with good views of Gangapurna, Glacier Dome, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Chulu West Peak, Chulu East Peak, Chulu Far East Peak and Tilicho Peak. We will cross over the Khangsar Khola bridge to reach Khangsar village for our overnight stay.

Day 10: Trek from Khangsar to Tilicho Peak Base Camp [4800m/15744ft]

Today we leave Khangsar and follow the trail that goes over through various ice lakes and glaciers to reach Tilicho Base Camp for our overnight stay. During our trek today, we have more chances of spotting wild animals such as Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar and several species of birds. There are tea houses at Tilicho Peak Base Camp, where we will spend our overnight before climbing Tilicho Peak. Our Himalayan Windhorse Sherpa climbing crew will make preparations for further climbing.

Day 11-28: Climbing Tilicho Peak [7135m/23402ft] and descend back to Base Camp

We will spend several days doing climbing training practices and spend adequate days for acclimatization. Our Sherpa crew will do all the hard works from carrying and setting up additional camps above base camp, provide hygienic meals during our climbing days and finding an appropriate route to the summit. Properly equipped with all the climbing gears we will follow the guidance and footsteps of our experienced climbing experts. Overcoming several technical climbing sections and taking weather conditions into consideration we head towards the summit of Tilicho Peak. Once at the summit we are rewarded with great views of major peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges – Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, World’s Deepest Gorge ‘ Kali Gandaki Valley’ and serene cobalt blue – Tilicho Lake. We will spend short and quality at the summit before descending down following the same route back to base camp.

Day 29: Trek from Base Camp to Khangsar

Having achieved our target – the summit of Tilicho Peak, we make a relaxed start and prepare for our return trekking. After breakfast, we leave Base Camp and retrace our steps on the same trail that descends back to Khangsar for our overnight stay.

Day 30: Trek from Khangsar to Pisang

From Khangsar we continue to retrace our steps on the same trail that heads back towards Manang. We will take our lunch at Manang and then continue our trek on a rather easy trail that leads us back to Pisang for ending our long trekking day. Overnight stay at Pisang.

Day 31: Trek from Pisang to Bagarchhap

After breakfast, we pack our gears and follow the same trail that heads through Dhukur Pokhari and descends from there to cross a suspension bridge. We will cross the river and trek along the banks of the Marsyangdi river to reach Chamje. From Chamje, we continue our trek passing through Koto village before arriving at Bagarchhap for the overnight stay.

Day 32: Trek from Bagarchhap to Chamje

The last day of our trek starts from Bagarchhap as we follow the trail that descends gradually towards Dharapani. Our trail continues passing through the village of Tal. From there a fairly moderate trek will bring us back to Chamje where our trek ends. We will celebrate the evening with our climbing team members after an adventurous – Tilicho Peak Expedition.

Day 33: Drive from Chamje back to Kathmandu

Today we will make a relaxed start and after breakfast, we take a drive from Chamje back to Kathmandu which takes seven to eight hours of drive journey. Our drive goes along the banks of Marsyangdi river over the scenic zigzag hilly roads towards Dumre. And from there drive along the banks of Trisuli river all the way back to Kathmandu. You will be transferred to the hotel after arriving at Kathmandu. You can either have rest at the hotel or take an evening walk around the busy market streets of Thamel.

Day 34: Leisure day at Kathmandu

You would surely like to see as much of Kathmandu as possible. The world heritage sites inside Kathmandu, if not visited on the second day of the trip can be visited on this day. An early start is practical to visit the temples of Kathmandu. Also, walking around the shopping area of Thamel is worth spending quality time at Kathmandu.
