Mt Labuche East Peak

The Lobuche Mountain consists of two different summits, viz. East and West with heights of 6,119 m and 6,145 m respectively. A continuous ridge connects them but there is still a sharp gap and a considerable distance between them. The East Peak is recognized as a trekking peak, whereas the West is known as an Expedition Peak. Lobuche being an attractive mountain offers various existing routes and also a potential for new ones. The dark triangle of its rocky East face rises over the moraines of the Khumbu Glacier to a spectacular skyline, forming the south ridge.

The peak of Lobuche East is reached by descending a marked notch and climbing steep snowy slopes to the top. On most occasions, the mountain is climbed on the summit ridge only as far as a subsidiary snow summit, south–east of the true peak and before the notch. This peak is identified as the false peak. Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa made the first ascent to Lobuche East on 25 April 1984 although there are possibilities that others have reached the summit before. But no records are available. Lobuche West Peak (6154m) The Lobuche Mountain consists of two different summits, viz. East and West with heights of 6,119 m and 6,145 m respectively. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu.

As prearranged, our Himalayan Windhorse officials will receive you at the airport on this very day. They’ll be at the entry point, waiting for your arrival. After a warm welcome and introduction, they’ll drive you to your hotel and help provide the keys to your room.

From there, you’ll be on your own until we meet again to discuss the trek briefly. Till then, you can get some rest or go on a walk in the streets of Thamel. But, make sure that you return to the hotel on time.

Day 2: Sightseeing Kathmandu

On the second day of the Lobuche East Peak Climbing trip in Nepal, we’ll have a rest and an exploration day of Kathmandu City. Early in the morning, we’ll pay a visit to Pashupatinath Temple and offer prayers. From there, we’ll drive to Boudhanath Stupa, which is 2.1 km far from Pashupati.

It’ll take us around 7 minutes to arrive at the pilgrimage, where you can witness the white-washed monastery. Inside the religious shrine, there are prayer wheels and flags everywhere. You’ll also hear the chants and the instruments played in the stupa.

Shortly after the monastery tour, we’ll head to Kathmandu Durbar Square, which helps you learn about the history of Nepal. While exploring the durbar square, you can see the courtyard, wooden temples, stone statues, and artefacts. After the sighting is over, we’ll get back to the hotel where you can have our dinner and take a rest.

Day 3: Fly to Lukla, Trek to Phakding

At the crack of dawn, we’ll fly to Tribhuvan Airport and catch a flight to Lukla. Given the clear sky after sunrise, we’ll easily catch a glimpse of rolling hills and lush meadows throughout the journey. The flight will last around 30 minutes before ending up at Lukla, a gateway to Everest.

We’ll briefly stop at the town and have some breakfast. From there, we’ll start the trek to Phakding by climbing the trail of the hillside along the left bank of Dudh Koshi River. After a few uphill and downward walks, we’ll arrive at Phakding. Overnight stay in a lodge in the village.

Day 4: Trek to Namche Bazaar

Shortly after having breakfast, we’ll get back to the trail that runs alongside Dudh Koshi River. Following the river valley above and crossing the suspension bridge, we’ll enter the dense forest filled with pine and fir.

On the way to the town, we’ll pass several villages, including Manjo. After entering the Sagarmatha National Park, the trek is arduous, especially with the decreasing atmospheric pressure.

Most of the trekkers get altitude sickness at this section; therefore, you’ll have to be cautious while climbing the trail. Some two hours walk of the steep hill with several highs and lows before getting to the famous Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar.

After reaching Namche, we’ll get an astonishing view of steep-sided valleys and lush green farms. The colorful local shops and villages add to the beauty of this town. To get some rest, we’ll stay in a local tea house tonight.

Day 5: Acclimatization at Namche Bazaar.

After the long and exhausting trip to Namche, it’s nice to take some time off and explore the town. Therefore, instead of walking miles to Dingboche, we’ll have a short walk to the Everest View Hotel. This trip will help us acclimatize and also offer us an impressive view.

The trek lasts for almost 2 hours, ascending a steep hill and paving the way from jagged terrain. Soon after reaching the hilltop at 3,880 meters, we’ll get a 360-degree view of glistening snow-capped mountains, wide valleys, and green hills.

After spending some time here and having breakfast, we’ll retrace the steps back to the town. Some trekkers also prefer to visit the Sherpa museum and even stroll the Khumjung village for acclimation. Overnight stay in a tea house.

Day 6: Trek to Tengboche.

Out of the village, we’ll continue trekking a rugged trail, inclining upward. After walking beside the ancient Mani wall, our trail gently descends the hill and passes through the ridge. From Phunki Tenga, we navigate a zigzagged path with a few ups and downs. The last two hours will be a bit frantic, following a continuous uphill trek.

Perched at 12,677 ft high, Tengboche offers a spectacular backdrop of Ama Dablam. You can also snap the beautiful green hills and narrow gorges from the hilltop across Imja Khola. In the afternoon, we’ll take a tour of the monastery and even pay respect—overnight in a tea house.

Day 7: Trek to Dingboche.

Trek to Dingboche is slightly challenging, with most of the path trail rising upward. Out of Tengboche village, the trail turns its way through the rhododendron and pine forest to arrive at Imja Khola. After crossing the suspension bridge, we’ll walk past the Mani stone wall to get to the Sherpa village of Pangboche.

The hike provides a lovely view of shimmering snow peaks like Ama Dablam and Lhotse. After walking a few more hours, we’ll end up at the remote settlement of Dingboche. Overnight stay in a tea house.

Day 8: Trek to Lobuche.

After a full breakfast at a tea house in Lobuche, we’ll continue our journey. The day starts with a steep climb off the side of a hill and into the wide valley of Imja. Walking the rugged terrains above Chukhung, we can spot the shimmering Ama Dablam and Lhotse ridge from miles away. After a few more hours of trekking over rocks and boulders, we’ll arrive at Lobuche.

Day 9: Trek to Everest Base Camp, Return to Gorak Shep.

With just a 2.8 miles long trail, trek to Gorak Shep doesn’t seem to take a lot of time. But, due to the extreme altitude and dirt path, the hike may last 3-4 hours. Putting up a good fight against the loose rocks and craggy hills, we’ll arrive at Gorak Shep.

After having lunch, we’re back to climbing the steep trail beside rocky dunes and glacial moraine. This part of this trek is a bit tricky with rising elevation and debris, so we’ll have to be a bit careful. Upon arriving at the base of Khumbu Icefall, we’ll witness Mt Everest along with the surrounding Cho Oyu and Nuptse.

The expedition also offers a view of Khumbu Glacier before leaving base camp. On the way down, the trek gets easy and finishes in a bit of time. We’ll stay the night in a tea house at Gorak Shep.

Day 10: Trek to Kala Patthar, Return to Lobuche.

Early the next day, we’ll ascend Kala Patthar from Gorak Shep. Since the trail is steep here and filled with rocks, it’ll take us between 2-3 hours to get up at the ridge. From the hilltop, we catch a glimpse of towering mountains, glacial lakes, and landscapes.

Just after the sightseeing is over, we’ll descend the trail to Gorak Shep. We’ll grab some lunch at the village and head back to Lobuche. Although walking the path is easy with continuous descent, the trek still requires 2-3 hours. Overnight stay at a tea house.

Day 11: Trek to Lobuche Peak Base Camp.

Our trek to Lobuche Peak Base Camp begins with climbing uphill and over rugged terrain. Since the hike takes a bit more time than usual, we’ll start early. We then follow the harsh trail, rising upward and cross the Lobuche Glacier from where the view of Cholatse and Thamserku emerges. After ascending the route for nearly 6 hours, we’ll fetch up at the Lobuche Base Camp. At base camp, our Sherpa crew will put up the tent where we’ll spend the night.

Day 12: Trek to High Camp.

After having breakfast and doing some leg stretching, we’ll leave for the trail that slopes upward. Following a narrow lane and a snow-covered ridge, our path paves the way to the High Camp.

Since the trail to high camp is slippery and covered in snow, we’ll wear crampons. Also, to climb the icy cliff, we’ll use an ice axe. Following the instruction of a trekking guide, we’ll reach the campsite at 5,400 meters.

As the trek to high camp is demanding and exhausting, we’ll take a rest and re-energize ourselves for the big day. Before heading up to the summit, medical specialists will check our health conditions for safety. We’ll also receive some training from the trek guide.

Day 13: Lobuche Peak Expedition, Return to Base Camp.

We’ll start climbing the mountain in pitch dark so that the trek is done by noon. Apart from that, there’s high wind in the morning, making it difficult to ascend the trail. There are many technical difficulties on the way to the peak; therefore, you’ll have to be more careful.

Using an ice axe and a fixed rope, we’ll ascend the glacier. Throughout the whole time, we’ll follow the instructions of the trek guide and stay together with the crew. They’ll lead the trail on the steep drops and snowy ridge.

The trail stretching from Lobuche Base Camp to the peak takes around 4 hours. But, once it reaches the acme, the mountain offers breathtaking views of Ama Dablam, Cholatse, Thamserku, and Kantega.

After spending a brief time at the crest, we’ll retrace our steps back to the camp. This time the trekking will get easier with the trail sloping downward. Back at the campsite, we’ll spend the night in a tent.

Day 14: Trek to Pangboche

After the much-needed rest at Lobuche Base Camp, we’ll climb down the trail to Pangboche today. Starting with a gentle descent below the hill and through the village, we’ll reach Pangboche.

From there, we’ll walk through the alpine forest of rhododendron and juniper trees. After hiking for around 5-6 hours, we’ll finally end up at the rural settlement of Pangboche. On the way, we can see memorials placed in honor of climbers who lost their lives on the mountain. At Pangboche, we’ll stay in a tea house.

Day 15: Trek to Namche Bazaar.

After breakfast, we’ll begin descending the trail from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar. We’ll start the day by passing through rhododendron and juniper forest. Crossing the Dudh Koshi River, we follow the route to the suspension bridge and into the pine forest after Dudh Koshi Gorge.

Along the path, we can see shimmering snow-covered mountains and deep valleys putting a lovely view. Our trail runs along a forested slope with many twists and turns. The entire trek takes us 6-7 hours before winding up at the town.

Day 16: Trek to Lukla.

Trek from Namche to Lukla is plain sailing, with most of the trail walking downward. It gradually descends the high hills and crosses several suspension bridges to wind up at the town.

After coming across the Hillary suspension bridge, the trail gets flat, making it easy for us to traverse. Finally, after the trek of 7 hours, we’ll arrive at the beautiful village of Lukla, which is also our dwelling for the night.

Day 17: Flight to Kathmandu

The last day of Lobuche East Peak Climbing is quite fun with no more extended path. After having breakfast in a tea house at Lukla, we’ll rush down to the Lukla airport and board the flight. The trip offers us a pristine view of Himalayan ranges, sweeping hills, and waterfalls for almost 30 minutes. After taking down the Tribhuvan airport, our staff will drive you back to the hotel so that you can take a nap.
