Mt. Baruntse Expedition (7129M)

This is a true expedition to a less climbed, but amazingly beautiful mountain. Serious mountaineers will see Mt Baruntse Peak (7129m/23,389ft) as another addition to their climbing logbook – despite the ice, fragile slopes, and dangers of climbing. This is part of the adrenalin rush of wanting to climb mountains. The higher the mountain the greater the rush!

Baruntse is located in the Khumbu region in the eastern region of Nepal with four peaks, four sides and is bordered by the Hunku Glacier in the south; in the east by the Barun Glacier and Imja Glacier in the northwest. From the peak, there are magnificent views of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, Cho Oyu, and Mt. Lhotse and a Panoramic view of the Himalayas !

There is more than one way to the top! The first route will start at Lukla viaMera La Pass (5800m) and across the Hunku are two different ways of trekking to the pinnacle. One is from Lukla through Mera La Pass (5800m) and Hunku Glacier and with a detour to Mera Peak (6476m.) as a warm-up and acclimatize climb before tackling Baruntse Peak. The other route is along the Makalu trail and across the West Barun Glacier. There are 50-degree slopes which make it necessary to be roped – and ready, before attempting this climb. A hazard, such as a cornice needs to be approached with great caution and have been known to suddenly break off. (A cornice is a mass of snow deposited by the wind, often overhanging, and usually near a sharp terrain break such as a ridge).

To minimize the danger from altitude sickness we will allow ample to acclimatize and will not take any unnecessary risks. We will steadily trek and then climb to higher altitudes, starting off from Seto Pokhari (5035m) to Baruntse Base Camp (5400m) and higher to Camp 1 (6100m).  We will have plenty of time at BBC to further acclimatize and prepare for the climb to the summit. We will spend the time at these higher altitudes taking short climbs higher and then returning to Base Camp. By the time we head of to the summit, we will be well and truly ready for the challenge ahead.  We will check, and double-check, all equipment and be sure that everyone is mentally and physically well enough to attempt the climb to Baruntse Summit (7129m) that should take between seven and ten hours.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel [1345m/4411ft]

As per the flight scheduled, our representatives from Himalayan Windhorse will receive you at the Tribhuvan Airport on this day. They’ll meet you at the arrival and offer a warm greeting before driving to the hotel. For your convenience, our staff will help you check-in at the hotel, after which you can relax in the room. The second best option is to stroll down the streets where corner shops and malls illuminate with sparkling lights and decorations. You’ll have to keep it short, though, and return to the hotel on time.

Day 2: Sightseeing around Kathmandu & Climbing Preparations Hotel/Resort

Kathmandu Valley is filled with so many historical and cultural attractions that it’ll be a great pity if we didn’t visit these places. Therefore, the following day, we’ll take a tour of some of UNESCO’s world heritage sites, starting with a visit to Pashupatinath Temple.

After offering prayers at the sacred Hindu temple, we’ll leave for Boudhanath Stupa, where you can see white-washed monasteries, colorful flags, and shops. After exploring the religious shrine, we’ll visit a historical monument in Bhaktapur, which has many courtyards, stone temples, and artifacts.

We’ll also take some time from the trip to visit our crew members for the Baruntse Expedition and discuss the trek. For the night, we’ll get back to the hotel.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and Trek to Chhuthang 45 minutes flight & 4-5 hrs Trek Lodge

After the beautiful outdoor trip to Kathmandu, we’ll fly to Lukla on the next day of the Baruntse Expedition. The flight may last between 30-40 minutes and comes with a mesmerizing view. After touching down the Lukla airstrip, we’ll take a short break for breakfast, then head towards Chhuthang.

We’ll follow the trail through the green pastures and wild forests before paving the way from just below Kalo Himal. We’ll pass several remote villages and small hamlets on the way to Chhuthang. Finally, after five hours of walking, we’ll make it to the village and rest the night at a tea house.

Day 4: Trek from Chhuthang to Tuli Kharka via Zatrawala Pass 5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

After breakfast, we’ll immediately set off for the trek to Tuli Kharka, which takes somewhere between 5-6 hours. The trails run over steep hills and follow a series of paths to arrive at Zatrawala Pass at 15,000ft. We’ll get a magnificent view of Numbur Himal, Karyolang Peak, Kong Ri, and many others from the hilltop. After enjoying the spectacles, we’ll descend the trail to Tuli Kharka and spend the night in the village.

Day 5: Trek from Tuli kharka to Kothe 6-7 hrs Trek Lodge

From Tuli Kharka, the trail rides off through the dense forest filled with rhododendron, oak, pine, and juniper. Along the way, we’ll get an impressive view of unique landscapes, rolling hills, and surrounding snow peaks.

Slowly, we’ll walk downhill to Hinku River and scale upward to Kothe from the other end. This charming village lies in the west of Hinku Valley and rewards its guests with the breathtaking view of lofty mountains and remote wilderness. Overnight in a tea house.

Day 6: Trek from Kothe to Thangnak 4-5 hrs Trek Lodge

After rising up to the scenic view of Kothe and having breakfast, we’ll continue our journey to Thangnak. The trail walks along the crest of Hinku River to Gondishung and passes Lungsumgba Gompa out of the village. Gradually, the path inclines beside the river and offers a gratifying view of Mega Peak, Kusum Kanguru Peak, and many other surrounding mountains.

From here, the trek gets a little easier taking us to the yak grazing meadow of Thangnak. A few more miles of walk, we’ll arrive at the village, lying at 4,326 meters. There are many local shops and tea houses which serve the guests on the Baruntse Expedition.

Day 7: Trek from Thangnak to Khare 5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

On the next morning of the Hinku Expedition, we’ll trace the route over the Hinku River and then the Shar Glacier. Climbing the steep hills and rocky moraine will bring us to the beautiful valley. The journey continues with a short vertical ascent till Khare, which gives us a glimpse of the northern face of Mera Peak. The village is gorgeous and has a lot of hidden places to explore. Overnight stay is in a tea house at Khare.

Day 8: Rest at Khare 1 day rest Lodge

Since the trek to Khare was long and strenuous, we’ll take a day off from the Baruntse Expedition. Instead, we’ll enjoy our time visiting nearby places and exploring significant landmarks. As a preparation for the trek ahead, we’ll climb Mera Glacier by paving the way through a steep ridge. This will indeed help us cope with the temperature at Mera Peak and prevent altitude sickness. We’ll spend the night in a tea house.

Day 9: Trek from Khare to Mera La Pass 4-5 hrs Trek Tented Camp

The 3 miles boulder-strewn path from Khare to Mera La Pass opens up with a sharp incline above the western ridge of Mera Glacier and follows it till the pass. For the most part, we’ll have an uphill walk which is strenuous and drains a lot of energy. After several hours of hiking, we’ll finally reach the crest from where the views are astounding. The trail here onward is seamed with snow, so we’ll use crampons and some rock climbing techniques.

Day 10: Trek from Mera La Pass to Seto Pokhari 5-6 hrs Trek Tented Camp

After breakfast, we’ll soon get to the trail heading to Seto Pokhari. The day starts with a steep climb into the meadow pastured by yak and off the remote valley. Along the path, we’ll be bestowed with an incredible view of soaring mountains, high alpine valleys, and clifftop.

After a short march, the trail ends at Seto Pokhari, where we can see the glistening lakes and windswept mountains. Among a series of lakes in the Hongu basin, it’s the first to be encountered by hikers. Overnight stay in a camp.

Day 11: Trek from Seto Pokhari to Baruntse Base Camp

Another day of the Baruntse Expedition will challenge us with the rugged trail that crosses a wide and rocky valley. We have to walk over 5 hours to reach the base camp, which doesn’t seem much. But, at an altitude of 5,300 meters, the trek gets intense, following low atmospheric pressure.

The higher we go, the more we’re likely to suffer from altitude sickness. Therefore, we’ll take it a bit slow while walking the trails with rocks and boulders that lead us to the base camp. Where your luxury tents are prepared by Himalayan Windhorse crews.

Day 12-23: Summit Mt. Baruntse [7129m/23882ft] and back to Base Camp 12 days climbing towards Mt. Barunste Tented Camp

The trek gets hard after Baruntse Base Camp. Most of the time, we’ll be ascending and descending the trail to acclimatize and avoid acute mountain sickness. We’ll follow the guide of Sherpas, who’ll help us get through the snowy ridge by putting ropes and setting camps.

The race to Baruntse summit begins as soon as we perform rituals at the base camp. We’ll make our way from the leftover inclined snow slope and Hunku Glacier. As the trail runs over a crevasse, we have to use ladders to get across it and arrive at the high camp.

From here, the trail gets a bit steeper and exposed to snow slopes that aren’t much difficult to climb. But, we’ll have to be careful of the high snowstorms that continuously hit the mountain. After reaching the summit at 7,162 meters, we’ll get a glance of scintillating snow-capped mountains like Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and more.

We’ll also be watching the towering glaciers and tranquil lakes from atop the crest. After the sightseeing, we’ll gently climb down the snowy ridge and head to the base camp to call it a day. Overnight stay in the Base Camp.

Day 24: Cleaning base camp and return to Seto Pokhari

After having breakfast, we’ll clean up the base camp and get the garbage disposed of. Soon after collecting the garbage, we’ll get all our stuff ready to descend Seto Pokhari. We’ll climb the way down through Hinku Valley, which is relatively easier this time. After a hike of 3-4 hours, our trail finished at Seto Pokhari. We’ll set up a tented camp to spend the night. With that, we have come to the end of another day of the Baruntse Expedition

Day 25: Trek from Seto Pokhari to Mera La Pass 5-6 hrs Trek Tented Camp

After breakfast, we’ll return to the trail, which is steep as compared to the day before. Since it lies in the remote part of the Khumbu region, there are not many settlements here. The path works its way through a windswept alpine valley and briefly rises up to the campsite of Mera La Pass. Overnight stay in a tent.

Day 26: Trek from Mera La Pass to Thangnak 6-7 hrs Trek Lodge

Starting the day with a warm breakfast and glimpses of splendid view, we’ll continue the Baruntse Expedition. The trek begins with an uphill walk via Mera La Pass, which provides magnificent scenery of alpine valleys and gleaming snow peaks, including Baruntse, Haling, and Makalu. We keep descending the trail from above the pass and through the beautiful village of Khare to arrive at Thangnak.

Day 27: Trek from Thangnak to Kothe 4-5 hrs Trek Lodge

With most of the trek downhill, we’ll have an easy time on the journey to Kothe. The day starts off with a gentle descent to the village. The trail heading to Kothe meanders below the craggy hills and into the subtropical forest, where you can encounter different wild animals and birds.

After coming down the high alpine region, we’ll hike a few more miles and finally get to the village. Lying approximately 30 miles from Kathmandu, Kothe is a stunning village between colorful hills and gorgeous landscapes.

Day 28: Trek from Kothe to Thuli Kharka 5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

After having breakfast in a tea house at Tuli Kharka, we’ll pick our backpacks and head to the trail, which initially ascends upward and moves along the dense forest. Shortly afterward, we traverse through the west of Hinku Valley towards Tuli Kharka. The walk will provide us a fantastic view of the south face of Mera Peak, Mera North, and Mera Central, which also can be noticed from the village.

Day 29: Trek from Tuli Kharka to Lukla 5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

It’s the last day of our Baruntse Expedition. Today we’ll be trekking Lukla from Tuli Kharka, which is just gorgeous. Leaving the village behind, we’ll head to Lukla, climbing the ridge of Kalo Himal. From there, we’ll ascend a steep hill and cross Zatrawala Pass, which is moderate in terms of difficulty level.

After getting on top of the pass, the trail gradually slopes down to the hill and comes across Chutanga. It then straight away descends the slopes all the way to Lukla, passing through wild forest and rough terrain. Finally, after the trek of almost 6 hours, we’ll end up at the famous Sherpa town, Khumbu. Overnight stay in a lodge.

Day 30: Fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla Airport

After making beautiful memories at Baruntse Expedition, it’s time for us to wind up the trek and head back to the valley. Thus, after having breakfast, we’ll make a quick run to the Lukla airport and board the plane.

Flying from the town to Kathmandu will be short, taking just about 30-40 minutes. The trip will reward us with an astonishing view of snow-capped mountains, surrounding rolling hills, and deep gorges. After landing at Tribhuvan Airport, our officials will transfer you back to the hotel, where you can get some sleep. With that, we have come to an end of our Baruntse Expedition.

Day 31: International Departure as per flight schedule

Now it is the time for farewell. Our representatives of Himalayan Windhorse will drop you at the International Airport as per your flight schedule. You need to get into the airport 3 hours prior to your flight. On broad, you have plenty of good memories of Baruntse Peak Climbing.
